The communities of West Maui have formed the West Maui Wildfire Readiness Ohana in an effort to mitigate wildfire risks and improve response to fire and fire threat for the benefit of all of West Maui, and to establish a model for other communities within the State of Hawaii to learn from and adapt to their individual communities. The Ohana is united in seeking State and Federal government assistance, landowner and public utility support, and public and private funding for fire prevention, abatement, response and recovery.

The Ohana endeavors to coordinate the strategies used or planned by the participating communities, partners, and ex-officio experts to minimize wildfire risks, share fire prevention best practices, prepare for emergency situations, facilitate emergency responses, coordinate with emergency services and first responders, and help provide elected officials with the information and resources to prepare for the threat of wildfire within our communities.

The participating Ohana partners are committed and engaged in West Maui wildland fire prevention and control solutions and are united in finding and implementing defensive strategies that not only safeguard communities, but also protect and revitalize natural environments, and fragile or endangered forest lands and wildlife.

The West Maui Wildfire Readiness Ohana’s purpose is to take ownership of the risks, preparedness and response to wildfires which strengthens its validity, community acceptance, broader participation in these programs, and strengthening local partnerships and teamwork among all stakeholders. It is the Ohana’s hope that their ethos will be embraced and adopted by all West Maui residents and businesses to aid in safeguarding the entire community.
